L’ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE DE COLUMBIA
presents
M OLIÈRE’S
L E
BOURGEOIS
GENTILHOMME
Cardinal Newman High School Auditorium
4701 Forest Drive
Columbia, 29206
Friday, February 20, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.
Sunday, February 22, 2009 at 2:00 p.m.
Performed in French
Free and open to the public (but donations to the AF welcome)
The Columbia Alliance Française theatrical troupe’s third annual show is one of Moli ère’s best‐loved comedies.
Wealthy retired cloth merchant M. Jourdain, besotted with the nobility in general and the beautiful marquise
Dorim ène in particular, schools himself in ways to impress her.
Encouraged in his delusions by an impoverished
count, Dorante (who duplicitously exploits him to win the marquise for himself), M. Jourdain refuses to marry
his daughter Lucile to Cl éonte, trolling for an aristocrat
instead of the worthy but modest suitor she loves.
Cl éonte’s wily valet, Covielle, himself in love with
Lucile’s maid, Nicole, hatches a plot to trick M. Jourdain into
believing he is, indeed, a gentleman and giving his daughter in marriage to Cl éonte, disguised as a Turkish
prince.

its U.S. partners, the Cultural Service
promotes French-American exchanges in the arts, film, education. It supports and advises individuals—artists, authors,
teachers, researchers and other professionals—as well as such institutions as art centers, film institutes, professional
networks, schools and universities, and NGOs, serving as a partner on many projects and programs. It works notably with the French-American Cultural Exchange foundation (FACE: www.facecouncil.org) on six French-American
programs focused on contemporary art, contemporary music, theater, university film screenings, cinema professionals, and university
partnerships at the Master’s level. The Cultural Service also oversees the network of French educational programs. The
